Special steel manufacturing processes

Deutsche Edelstahlwerke’s special steel manufacturing processes ensure high-quality steel through advanced methodologies and rigorous controls at every stage. Learn more about the special steel production processes and how they directly impact the performance and durability of equipment and components.

Special steel manufacturing processes

Special steel is a fundamental material in many industrial sectors due to its strength, durability, and versatility. The manufacturing processes of special steels require a highly sophisticated and controlled approach, essential to ensure that the material properties precisely meet the required technical demands.

Stages of special steel production

The production of special steel begins with the careful selection of base materials, mainly metal scrap and alloys. These components are melted in an electric arc furnace, a process that allows precise control of the temperature and chemical composition of the molten metal, thus ensuring the quality and desired properties of the steel.

Secondary Metallurgy and Casting

After melting, the metal undergoes secondary metallurgy in the special steel production processes, where it is further purified and prepared for casting. Depending on the final product specifications, the steel can be cast into ingot molds to form solid blocks or through a continuous casting process that produces more uniform and homogeneous shapes.

Recasting and processing

Once cast, the steel can undergo further remelting processes such as vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electro-slag remelting (ESR). These processes, carried out at the Deutsche Edelstahlwerke plant, enhance the purity and mechanical properties of the material. Subsequently, the steel is ready to be forged or rolled, transforming it into the desired shapes for specific industrial applications.

Heat treatments and mechanical processing

The production processes of special steel related to subsequent mechanical machining include cutting, milling, and turning, necessary to achieve the final dimensional specifications. Additionally, various heat treatments are applied to optimize the steel’s hardness, toughness, and wear resistance.

Final quality control

Each stage of the production process is followed by rigorous quality controls to ensure that the steel meets all required criteria. The final inspection includes hardness tests, metallographic analyses, and other specific tests necessary to confirm the material’s characteristics.

The production processes of special steel: conclusion.

The production processes of special steel by Deutsche Edelstahlwerke (DEW), the steelworks we represent, are an example of excellence in materials engineering. Through this detailed and controlled approach, we are able to provide our customers with superior quality steel, suitable for a wide range of industrial applications. This is just the beginning of a series of insights that will explore each stage of special steel production, offering a comprehensive view of how this essential material is made.
