What do we mean by Green Steel?

  • Blog

When we talk about Green Steel, we are not referring to a simple commercial label, but to a concrete model of circular economy: steel produced through rigorous processes designed to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions throughout the entire life cycle. This result is achieved by acting on three fundamental levers:

Optimized raw materials: Use of a very high percentage of recycled scrap with a circular economy perspective.
Efficient processes: Technologies that limit the consumption of energy and primary resources.
Clean energy sources: Use of low-carbon energy in production.

It is a fundamental paradigm shift, well summarized by the words of Mauro Bonomi:

Today, talking about sustainability does not mean following a trend. It means taking responsibility for what we produce, transform, and deliver every day.

The Swiss Steel Group Model: EAF and Circular Economy

According to the vision of Swiss Steel Group, of which we are proud partners for Italy, Green Steel is a concrete reality. The company stands out for producing steel exclusively through Electric Arc Furnaces (EAF) and not the traditional coal-based blast furnace route. The system is based on processing approximately 2 million tons of scrap per year, making the group one of the largest players in recycling in the countries where it operates.
Thanks to rigorous operating standards and the adoption of energy coming largely from renewable sources, overall emissions are up to 83% lower than the global sector average.
The “Green Steel” initiative is therefore a structured program of progressive emissions reduction, based on measurable and transparent data. The goal is twofold: to decarbonize internal production and to support customers and partners in reducing the climate footprint of their finished products by providing a fully transparent carbon footprint.

How we live Green Steel at Bonomi Acciai

For Bonomi Acciai, sustainability is not an abstract concept to be left solely to steel mills, but a series of concrete actions applied to what is truly under our control. While we do not deal with steel production, as distributors and strategic partners, we actively contribute to the “Green” supply chain by working on four key aspects: selection, responsibility, transparency, and technical support.

Selection of producers
Sustainability begins with the choice of supplier. We historically collaborate with partners like Swiss Steel Group who adopt low-emission processes and advanced circular economy models, such as the exclusive use of EAF technology. This allows us to offer the Italian market materials that combine maximum technical performance with consistency with new ESG requirements.
Responsible material use
Steel is a precious and sustainable resource that does not lose quality even after repeated use. Through optimized cuts and correct planning of processing in our service center, we work to minimize scrap (offcuts) generated internally and in our customers’ processes. Less waste means less material to remelt and fewer resources consumed: a more efficient supply chain overall.
Transparency on supplied materials
The market demands reliable data. When available, we share technical and environmental information regarding the materials we distribute. Transparency in disclosing the carbon footprint allows our customers to evaluate and control their upstream emissions (Scope 3).
Targeted technical support
The most sustainable steel is the one that is not wasted. We provide our metallurgical expertise to choose the steel grade best suited to the specific application, avoiding oversizing, reworking, or unnecessary heat treatments that would needlessly impact costs and the overall environmental impact.

What we mean by Green Steel: in conclusion.

Green Steel represents a decisive and irreversible step for the future of our sector. For producers like Swiss Steel Group, it means rethinking industrial processes by turning waste into value; for companies like Bonomi Acciai, it means selecting consciously, working more efficiently, and providing customers with clear information.
The transition is underway: our task is to accompany it with competence, concreteness, and responsibility.
