Although often underestimated, no material is as sustainable as steel. Even after repeated use, it never loses its intrinsic high quality. But for our partner Swiss Steel Group, the circular economy goes far beyond simply remelting scrap. It means transforming every by-product of the industrial process into a new resource, according to the principle that “Nothing is wasted”, enabling true total steel recovery.

Everything starts with raw materials. Swiss Steel Group prioritizes locally sourced scrap (often transported by rail), but the real added value lies in the selection phase. The more precisely scrap is separated at intake, the more accurately we can fine-tune the chemical composition of sustainable steel, drastically reducing the use of primary alloys extracted from mines. This attention to detail directly results in a lower environmental footprint.

Being a driving force in the circular economy means that even what is not steel must be given a second life. Here are three concrete examples of how Swiss Steel Group enhances by-products:

• Heat for the community: At the Emmenbrücke site, excess heat generated by the rolling mill is not wasted. We recover 20 GWh of thermal energy every year, feeding it into the city’s district heating network. In practical terms, we heat around 1,000 households with energy generated from steel.
• Stronger roads: Slag from electric arc furnaces, thanks to its rock-like nature, is recovered and used as high-quality aggregate for road construction, replacing natural gravel or cement. Ground limestone also finds a new life in the cement industry.
• Recovery of valuable metals: Fumes from the electric arc furnace process are filtered. The captured dust is rich in zinc, which is recovered by specialized companies and reused for galvanization or brass production.

1. Scrap as currency
In our customers’ workshops, machining scrap is often seen as a disposal cost. We promote a different perspective: that scrap is tomorrow’s raw material. By supplying high-quality steels and supporting customers in the separate management of machining residues, we facilitate the return of that material to EAF steel mills, closing the loop in a clean and efficient way.

2. “Nesting” optimization
The best waste is the waste that is never produced. In our service center, we use advanced nesting software for cutting operations. This allows us to utilize every millimeter of sheet or bar stock, minimizing technical scrap. Less material wasted during cutting means less energy spent on transport and remelting.

3. Enhancing material properties
The circular economy also relies on durability. Recommending the right sustainable steel for the right application (thanks to our technical know-how) means extending the lifespan of the final component. A longer-lasting part is one that will not need to be replaced (and therefore remelted) in the short term.

Sustainable steel is not just a product, it is an ecosystem.
