Special Steel Production Processes: ESR Remelting

ESR (Electro-Slag Remelting) remelting is an advanced technology used in the special steels industry to obtain purer materials with minimal segregation. This process represents an effective method to improve steel quality, thus ensuring superior performance for critical applications.

The ESR Recast Process

The starting material for the ESR (Electro-Slag Remelting) process consists of steel ingots with a defined chemical composition, produced through conventional methods such as electric arc furnace (EAF) melting followed by vacuum refining. During the remelting process, a steel ingot is used as an electrode, and by applying a potential difference between the electrode and the bottom of the mold, the necessary heat is generated to melt its tip.

The Role of Slag in Remelting

The molten bath reaches temperatures close to 2000 °C, with the steel melting in the form of small droplets. These droplets pass through the liquid slag, which traps impurities such as sulfur and other unwanted elements. This process is essential to obtain steel with high levels of purity and homogeneity.

Solidification and Ingot Formation

Molten steel is deposited at the bottom of the water-cooled mold, where it begins to solidify and form a new ingot. This ingot will subsequently undergo forging and/or rolling operations to obtain the final products with the desired geometry.

Special steel production processes – ESR Remelting: conclusion.

Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR) represents a critical phase in the production of special steels, ensuring a superior level of purity and quality. At the Deutsche Edelstahlwerke (DEW) steelworks we represent, this process is carried out with the utmost precision to deliver steels that meet the most demanding requirements for industrial applications.
