Talking about Green Steel is a necessary first step, but not a sufficient one. Industrial needs are not all the same: some aim to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions of the materials used, while others, due to regulatory requirements or more advanced ESG objectives, need to go further.

For this reason, Swiss Steel Group has structured an approach to steel sustainability based on three distinct levels, designed to meet different environmental needs without compromising technical performance.

It is the common starting point for all Swiss Steel Group production.

• Technology: production exclusively via electric arc furnaces (EAF)
• Method: integration into the circular economy and use of scrap as raw material
• Result: CO₂ emissions significantly lower than the average of traditional steel production

All Swiss Steel products fall into this category, which already represents an advanced environmental standard.

The second level addresses the energy factor. With Green Steel Climate+, steel is produced using electricity sourced exclusively from certified renewable sources, such as hydroelectric, wind or solar power.
This allows for a further reduction in CO₂ equivalent emissions related to the melting phase, cutting emissions associated with Scope 2 and moving the process closer to an overall low-emissions model.

The third level addresses one of the most complex challenges: high-performance stainless steels. Traditionally, these materials require the use of primary alloys (nickel, chromium, molybdenum) extracted from mines, with a significant environmental impact.
With Green Steel Stainless+, Swiss Steel Group produces stainless steels composed of at least 95% recycled materials, thanks to extremely accurate selection of high-alloy scrap. This approach makes it possible to significantly reduce emissions related to purchased materials (Scope 3).

The availability of these three product lines does not change our role, but it clarifies our responsibility. At Bonomi Acciai we do not produce steel: our task is to make these solutions available to the market in a correct, understandable and technically consistent way.

1. Support in material selection
   Not all projects require the same level of sustainability. In many cases, the use of standard Green Steel already represents a significant improvement compared to materials produced through traditional routes. When required, we support customers in evaluating Climate+ or Stainless+ solutions, based on application specifications and supply chain requirements.
2. Document consistency
   For applications subject to strict specifications (for example automotive or large infrastructure projects), we provide the technical documentation and certificates supplied by the producer, so that material characteristics are clearly identifiable and verifiable.
3. Planning and availability
   Some steel grades, particularly those with a high recycled content or specific energy requirements, require more careful planning. Our role is to coordinate sourcing and timelines to ensure continuity for our customers’ production.
4. Dissemination of technical knowledge
   Many solutions available today are not yet fully known. Part of our work consists in informing designers and technical departments about the existence of more sustainable alternatives, clearly explaining limits, benefits and fields of application, without excessive simplification.

Sustainability is a progressive journey, not a binary choice.

Green Steel, Climate+ and Stainless+ represent three distinct levels along this path. The role of Bonomi Acciai is to support customers in understanding and correctly applying these solutions, always keeping technical performance and industrial reliability at the center.
