Measuring to improve: why reporting really matters
Saying that a steel is “sustainable” is no longer enough today. Markets, regulations and industrial supply chains require verifiable data, shared criteria and internationally recognized standards.
For this reason, Swiss Steel Group has structured its sustainability strategy around a robust system for measuring and reporting CO₂ emissions, based on the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard.
This approach makes it possible to clearly distinguish between different emission sources and to accurately identify where action is needed to reduce them.
Emissions are divided into three categories, the so-called Scopes.
Scope 1 – Direct emissions (process and combustion)
These are emissions that occur within production facilities and are directly controlled by the producer.
This scope includes:
- Metallurgical processes: carbon contained in scrap and ferroalloys is removed through oxygen injection in electric arc furnaces (EAF) and AOD/VOD converters
- Combustion: use of natural gas in burners, coal for slag foaming (necessary for efficiency and refractory protection), and consumption of graphite electrodes
- Heat treatments: heating steel above 1,100 °C in rolling and forging furnaces
Scope 2 – Indirect emissions from energy
The mobility sector accounts for around 44% of total production, with increasing attention also paid to CO₂ emissions reporting across the supply chain.
- Automotive: We are shaping the future of mobility by working closely with the R&D departments of major brands. The goal? Lighter, stronger steels to reduce vehicle consumption and support increasingly accurate CO₂ emissions reporting.
- Aerospace: Here, perfection is not an option—it is a requirement. An aircraft that must accelerate from 0 to 260 km/h in just a few seconds (with a take-off weight of nearly 600 tonnes) needs materials with absolute reliability for landing gear and engines, supported by clear and transparent CO₂ emissions reporting.
Heavy Industry and Construction
- Mechanical Engineering: Represents 27% of our market. We supply steels for machinery that must operate 24/7 without downtime.
