Properties and Influence of Cobalt

Cobalt (Co) stands out from other alloying elements for its unique properties, making it important in high-performance steels.

Main effects:

  1. Tempering resistance:
    • Cobalt helps maintain the mechanical properties of steels stable, even after prolonged exposure times.
  2. Thermal conductivity:
    • Cobalt promotes better heat dissipation, making it useful in steels for high-temperature applications.
  3. Hardenability:
    • Unlike other alloying elements, cobalt increases the critical cooling rate, thereby reducing hardenability. Although it does not form carbides, it has the advantage of stabilizing martensite, which helps increase tempering resistance and promotes thermal conductivity at high temperatures.
Main applications:
  • Use in super-rapids.
  • Steels for hot working and for high temperature applications.
  • Production of permanent magnets, thanks to the increase of parameters such as maximum induction, magnetic permeability and coercive force.

Effect of Cobalt on Tempering Resistance

Tempering diagrams of BA80 and BA40: it can be observed that BA40 shows higher tempering resistance at elevated temperatures (600°C), thanks to the presence of 3% Cobalt (Co), which is absent in BA80.

Cobalt: Conclusion

Cobalt is an alloying element useful for improving the stability of martensite and increasing tempering resistance. These properties make it indispensable for complex industrial applications and technologically advanced sectors. At Bonomi Acciai, representatives of the Swiss Steel Group, we are committed to providing special steels containing cobalt to ensure superior performance in the most demanding conditions.
