A roadmap, not just a promise: milestones to 2030
Talking about sustainability is useful, but planning it is essential. That is why our partner Swiss Steel Group has not limited itself to setting generic goals, but has defined a precise Steel Decarbonization Roadmap for Scope 1 and Scope 2. It is an industrial action plan based on five strategic pillars: Circular Materials, Low-Carbon Electricity, Renewable Gases, Electrification and Efficiency.
Here are some of the concrete milestones that are transforming the Group’s production sites:
- 2023–2028 (Hydreams Project): A multi-year EU research project investigating hydrogen oxy-fuel combustion and its impact on steel and equipment.
- 2024 (Renewables): Launch of a consortium to build and operate renewable energy plants (wind/photovoltaic) in Germany.
- 2025 (Electrification): Replacement of the natural gas forging furnace with an electric one at the Sorel plant. In the same period, pilot tests begin for the use of secondary substitute materials (“Carbon Substitution”).
- 2025–2029 (Ugine): Conversion of the first rolling mill furnace zones from natural gas to electric energy (hybrid furnace).
- 2026 (Hagen): Replacement of a gas heat treatment furnace with an electric one.
How we experience the Steel Decarbonization Roadmap at Bonomi Acciai
Why is a Swiss/German technical steel decarbonization roadmap important for an Italian company purchasing steel from Bonomi? Because it provides planning certainty. In a volatile market, knowing that your supplier has a fully funded and scheduled technological investment plan through 2030 offers strategic advantages:
1. Alignment with your Scope 3 targets Many of our customers have decarbonization targets for 2030 or 2040. By purchasing from Bonomi Acciai, you can “overlay” our roadmap onto yours. You already know today that the steel you will purchase in 2026 or 2028 will have a progressively lower impact, helping you reach your targets without changing suppliers.
2. Technological Security
The roadmap shows that Swiss Steel Group is investing heavily in electrification and hydrogen. This ensures that production sites will remain state-of-the-art and competitive, avoiding the risk of technological obsolescence that threatens traditional coal-based steel plants.
3. Long-Term Partnership
We are not a “spot” supplier. Sharing this roadmap means positioning ourselves as a long-term partner. We are telling you: “This is where we will be in five years. Join us.”
Steel Decarbonization Roadmap: conclusion
Sustainability cannot be improvised. It is designed, financed and executed year by year. The Steel Decarbonization Roadmap is the guarantee that Green Steel by Bonomi Acciai is not a passing trend, but the irreversible direction of our industrial future.
